Timber Legality and Certification

The concerns about trading legally sourced and certified timber is gaining prominence globally. While it is a market driven process, it will have effect on countries that are producing timber and trading internationally.

The PNG Government recognizes this and is developing the Papua New Guinea Timber Legality Standard (PNG-TLS) to address timber legality and certification.

As part of this process as well, PNG has developed a country specific guidelines (CSG) with Australia to assist our producers to export to Australia legally verified timber products.

There is also a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) National Forest Management Standard available that timber operators can adopt on a voluntary basis as part of their forest certification process.
